About Company
Since 1992, MITRE's Nanosystems Group has been performing broadly-based research and development (R&D) in nanotechnology. A unique strength of the group's technical efforts is this focus on systems engineering starting at the molecular scale.
Led by Senior Principal Scientist James Ellenbogen and Group Leader Brigitte Rolfe, ongoing work includes the development of systems such as:
- Nanoelectronic computers
- Nano-enabled power systems
- Nanosensors
- Millimeter-scale robots
These nanotechnology systems engineering efforts are supported by basic research and development in areas such as:
- Novel techniques for nanofabrication
- Quantum device modeling and analysis
- Carbon nanotube-based circuits and materials
- Bio-nanotechnology
Starting in the early 1990s, the group has made influential innovations in nanotechnology, including key technical papers, inventions, and patents. It has employed the resulting insights and skills to offer wide-ranging assistance to the U.S. Government, including collaboration with government officials in the planning of major nanotechnology R&D programs, as well as in performing successfully key technical tasks on the critical path to program success.
Another key element of the MITRE Nanosystems Group's efforts is the participation by very young, but exceptionally talented high school, undergraduate, and graguate students in its futuristic advanced research efforts. These student employees collaborate closely with senior staff, and their joint efforts have contributed materially to the success of U.S. efforts in nanotechnology. Also, this student mentorship program has made a contribution toward the education of the next-generation of highly skilled scientists and engineers in the U.S.
