NanoMed was founded in 2000 by Russell Mumper, Ph.D. and Michael Jay, Ph.D., University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy faculty members and the inventors of the advanced drug delivery technologies the company has licensed from the University of Kentucky Research Foundation. Stephen Benoit joined NanoMed in 2001 as CEO.

The company's labs are located at the University of Kentucky’s Advanced Science & Technology Commercialization Center. NanoMed's corporate headquarters is located at M-TEC in The Groves Business Park in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
