Their research group is working on atomic origins of various condensed matter physics phenomena using scanning probe microscopy. Low-dimensional electron systems in graphene and topological insulators discover symmetry-protected topological phases. Quantum mechanical phase transitions may be induced and detected in a strongly correlated systems covering high temperature superconductors. In addition, single atomic spin states may be checked and detected by spin-polarized tunneling electrons. These knowledge may open a door toward a new direction in condensed matter physics.
