The idea of Centre for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (CAMAN), as an interdisciplinary research university network, has been put forward by professors of chemistry, physics and electronics. The Centre was established by a directive of the University Senate in 1998, and started its activity in 1999. The Centre has no administrative structure or personnel, being a self-organising entity consisting of research groups active at various Faculties of the University.
The main goals include promoting integration of research community, supporting interdisciplinary studies in various fields related to advanced materials and nanotechnology, and stimulating joint research related to operation of complex systems with control of its structure and function in nano-scale. The integration of activities of several research groups allows them to initiate new scientific programs in Poland and to enhance collaboration on the international scale. There are six research laboratories and one centre of excellence affiliated to the Centre.
