Merck OLED Materials GmbH, based in Frankfurt, designs, manufactures and markets high performance advanced materials for displays and other electronics applications. The company is one of the leading manufacturers of materials for organic light emitting diodes (OLED).
The company was formed on 1 April 1999 as Covion Organic Semiconductors GmbH as spin out of the central research of Hoechst AG. In March 2005 Covion was acquired by Merck KGaA and integrated into the Liquid Crystal Division. In August 2005 Covion was renamed to Merck OLED Materials GmbH. Currently Merck OLED Materials has around 75 employees of which more than 80% work in research and development in the Industrial Park Höchst.
Merck OLED Materials was created to build on technology leadership in organic semiconductor materials, capitalising on a series of R&D achievements since 1992. The company offers both high-performance small molecule and conjugated polymer OLED materials at commercial scale.
Merck OLED Materials' prime focus is to translate materials innovation into high-quality commercial production for industry-leading OEMs. As a result Merck OLED Materials works in close partnership with leading display manufacturers. In 2002 Philips introduced the first commercial PLED display.
