The Material Physics Institute of the University of Porto (Instituto de Física dos Materiais da Universidade do Porto; IFIMUP) is a research institute dedicated to the study of material science.
The Material Physics Institute of the University of Porto is located on the campus of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. IFIMUP is, together with INESC-MN and CQFM, a member of the Portuguese Associated Laboratory Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (IN). IFIMUP has a long tradition and is internationally recognized for its fundamental research on the physics of advanced materials with significant scientific and technological impact, through the detailed, accurate and systematic characterization of a wide range of physical properties over extended ranges of temperature, magnetic and electric fields. The research activities cover the Physics of Magnetic Materials, Magnetoelectric Dielectrics and related Materials, as well as Colossal magnetoresistance oxides. In the last decade nanotechnologies have been introduced and extended research has been done in the areas, template based nanofabrication of nanowires and nanotubes, nanogranular and nanostructured magnetic films, namely multilayers, spin valves and magnetic tunnel junctions. In parallel, fundamental research is being performed in layered/nanostratified materials having giant magnetocaloric and magnetostrictive effects.
